Transformation in Psychotherapy

Join Kim Burris, Holistic Psychotherapist, for a conversation about transformation, healing and integration in psychotherapy.

Hey everybody. I'm Kim Burris, welcome. I wanted to talk today about this idea of transformation. I came across this really beautiful quote that I posted on Instagram recently and a lot of you are resonating with it and it's just been making me think about how as humans, we can get caught in this trap of thinking that things should always feel good or feel easy.

I think when we're living in alignment and integrity with who we are and what we are doing here on this planet, we can feel this sense of ease and integration. The sense of being centered and grounded in purpose doesn't mean it's easy. It doesn't mean that things are always feeling good. And my sense is, when I say that out loud, it’s like, ‘well duh!’ But also that it bears repeating and having a conversation about it.

I want to read you this quote. It's by Victoria Erickson and it says:

'Transformation isn't sweet and bright. It's a dark and murky, painful pushing and unraveling of the untruths you've carried in your body, a practice in facing your own created demons, a complete uprooting before becoming.'

Just taking a moment to settle in with this truth of unraveling, this process of healing and integration and arriving is really...a practice of unraveling and reweaving.

As we look back and then look at our present situation, we look back to see what patterns have I inherited from my parents, from society, from the inherited cells in our DNA...our lineage. That's real. We don't show up as a blank slate here. We're all inter connected and we all carry around our own truths and our own blueprint for truth. And we also come in with a lot of other stuff, programming, and wiring in our minds and wiring and our nervous systems.

Our bodies are carrying so much information, so much wisdom and so much pain.

It's not just that we arrive in our minds and say, awesome, I've done all the spiritual work. I've done my therapy, my integration work, my yoga, my meditation. I know how to connect. I know how to arrive, I’m good.

Change and transformation as a spiral. We're good…and then we come back to the things and places that are painful and challenging for us. And we tease the knot a little bit more, unravel another thread, untangle ourselves a bit more so that we can return to our own wisdom body and return to our own truth and our own light. And so that we can arrive here and be more of ourselves, our authentic selves. But guys, it's not always easy and we're not supposed to be doing it alone.

So find your people. Find the coach, find the therapist, find the yoga teacher, the class, the community, the workshop, and then keep going back again and again, returning to yourself, returning to others, returning to community, finding a place that feels safe for you. It's really, really important that we do this work together in community.

Those are my thoughts on transformation for today. Please leave me a comment below or send me a message. I would love to continue this conversation and hear your thoughts. So please don't be shy. Let me know what you think, where you're at, what you're celebrating today, what you're struggling with…where your growing edge is.
