Transcript: What is the Goal of Holistic Psychotherapy?

Good morning everybody, Kim Burris here.

Today's Q+A is: ‘What is the Goal of Holistic Psychotherapy?’

So there's this common misperception that going into therapy is a place to get advice, to figure out what to do, to find out what to do...

So, there's some truth in this.

There's a yes and no here.

A therapist’s role is not to actually give you advice.

The whole goal, point and purpose of psychotherapy and counseling is to move you into alignment with your highest self.

And what that means is to move you into a relationship with yourself so that you can access your own wisdom.

So that you can clear the cobwebs in your mind to unhook from the unconscious patterns that are just repeating themselves over and over.

This is this idea of the repetition compulsion, which is a fancy way of saying you keep doing the same thing over and over even though part of you wants to do something different or knows:

I don't want to be having this kind of relationship.

I don't want to be triggered in this way.

I don't want to be upset with this person.

I don't want to feel…X Y or Z everyday…

but I don't know how to change it.

That's usually the motivation for coming into therapy, or seeing a counselor or coach,

is to change your unconscious patterns.

And how we do that is not by another person saying oh you need to do this, but it's coming in to sit with another human that doesn't know you yet, that can help you find that roadmap and provide tools for you to unhook and return to yourself… your true self.

And so that's unhooking from things, the templates and behaviors that you learned and inherited from your family of origin, from the life that you've lived up until now, and so it's not that anything has to be terribly wrong with you to be coming in for therapy… It's that you can be experiencing… that you can know that what you're experiencing is not your best self… is not your best life… and from that place, with deep deep deep curiosity, coming in to be extremely vulnerable with another person, that can help you look around your life. And to look back.

Look back at where you've been, explore where you're at, and determine a course of action for where you want to be, so that you can actually get there.

And we all need this. We all need support in doing this, and of course, there are so many beautiful ways to arrive here. Psychotherapy and holistic psychotherapy being one of them.

So those are my thoughts on what the purpose of holistic psychotherapy and counseling is.
